Subtle Ceremonies
If you have a family composed of mixed religious beliefs and don't want to have a full blown ritual, it is often a good idea to incorporate handfasting techniques into a traditional wedding ceremony.
All the known and familiar elements are there, but the added bonus of the visual knot tying is included to ceremonially bind the couple.
It's not usual to combine rings and the knot tying, but it can be done if the rings are blessed and presented first. That way there are no clumsy hand movements and awkward moments.
Attendants
As well as having the option to have the cords bound by the officiant, you can include your wedding party in the knot tying. This makes a great memory for each of them and as tradition would have 3, 9 or 13 knots, there's plenty of options for numbers.
